THE REPERTORY OF CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL
John Milsom
INTRODUCTION
Within the music collection in Christ Church Library, a clear
distinction can be made between items that were formerly owned
institutionally by Christ Church Cathedral, and materials that
formerly belonged personally to individuals associated with the
choir. The books listed below all fall into the former category;
cumulatively, they reveal much about the cathedral's performing
repertory as it existed between the mid 17th and early 19th century.
Manuscripts and printed books are included; they are arranged
in approximately chronological order.
As the 19th century progressed, the choir relied increasingly
upon inexpensive sets of printed sheet-music containing single
compositions, many of which also survive. These copies fall outside
the current scope of the Online Catalogue, and enquiries concerning
them should be addressed to the Librarian.
- Mus. 1220-4: manuscript. Five partbooks (Contratenor Decani;
Tenor Decani and Cantoris; Bass Decani and Cantoris) from an
otherwise lost set of at least eight partbooks. Principal layers:

Subsequent layers copied at Christ Church by members of the Cathedral
Choir during the later 17th and early 18th centuries.
- Mus. 438: manuscript. Organ accompaniments to services and

Cathedral.
