Mus. 1232

Manuscript. Organ accompaniments to English anthems and service music, copied by William Walond Sr; English, 1740s. Copied in Oxford for use at Christ Church Cathedral. (Follow this link for a list of surviving music-books from Christ Church Cathedral from the Restoration to the early 19th century.) In the inventory below, items 1-11 are copied from the front of the volume, items 12-18 from the rear with the volume inverted.

Item 8 (p. 83): dated 'Mar: 4th 1742/3'.
Item 18 (p. R77): a section of this work has been attributed to 'Dr Hayes' = William Hayes, who was awarded the Oxford degree of D.Mus. in 1749. This attribution may be a later addition to the MS.
Item 18 (Ca): deleted, with the instruction (p. R80) to 'turn to No. 19' (= Mus. 1233, where the piece is copied in full.

Oblong format, 375 x 257 mm. 95 folios, paginated in ink by Walond Sr. Unused ruled staves on p. R42. Mid 18th-century binding of rough brown leather over boards, blind tooled, and inscribed '18' on the upper and lower covers; rebacked and generally repaired probably in the late 19th century. Indexes of contents have been added by an unidentified 19th-century hand on replacement flyleaves at the front and rear of the volume. No early bookplate.

Provenance: transferred from Christ Church Cathedral, probably in the early 20th century.
