Mus. 20

Manuscript. Motets by Gasparo Casati and Natale Monferrato, copied in score by Henry Bowman; English, c. 1670-85. The same four pieces were also copied by Edward Lowe at the start of Mus. 621 (ff. 1-41). Items 1, 2 and 4 ultimately derive from the printed copies in Mus. 284-8(5); item 3 derives from the printed copy in Mus. 284-8(4). For another copy by Bowman of these pieces, see Mus. 623-6.

Table of titles and composers in modern form. Display form found in manuscript.

1 Gasparo Casati Bone Jesu, verbum patris ff. 0v-2v
2 Gasparo Casati Tota pulchra es, amica mea ff. 3r-5r
3 Natale Monferrato Regina caeli laetare ff. 5r-6r
4 Gasparo Casati O dulce nomen Jesu ff. 6v-8r

Upright format, 367 x 235 mm. Collation: bifolio (= front flyleaf + f. [0]); single sheet (= f. 1); then 2 gatherings each of 3 nested bifolios (= ff. 2-7; 8-[13]). Further gatherings of blank paper follow ; their collation has not been researched. Unused ruled staves on ff. 8v-9r; thereafter, all the remaining pages are blank. Contemporary binding of thick white card. The contents have been identified by Malchair in pencil on the verso of the front flyleaf. Bookplate 2. 19th-century shelfmark: H.1.20.

Provenance unknown, but most likely from the Aldrich bequest, because of the presence of bookplate 2. The earliest catalogue entry for this item is by Hind in Archives 1717, where it is listed at position H.63 as 'Bone Jesu, Verbum patris &c. Folio. M.S.'; in Mus. 20 itself, the shelfmark 'H.63' is written on the front flyleaf in Hind's hand.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 46.
