Mus. 1141b (ff. 101-4)

Manuscript. Violin parts for [John Blow], ode ['Gesta Britannica'], in two sections, 'Non arma regum' and 'Dum pulsa strident timpana', here unattributed and designated only as '1st Song' and '2d Song'. Copyist unidentified (see below); English, late 17th century.

Upright format, 370 x 235 mm. Two bifolios, a 'First Treble' [violin] part (ff. 101/104), which now encloses a 'Second Treble' [violin] part (ff. 102-3). The resulting fascicle has been paginated '75-82' by an 18th-century hand; the significance of that pagination is not yet clear. Bound into Mus. 1141b, an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum. No early bookplate.

Provenance uncertain (see below).

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 38.

These violin parts presumably derive from Blow's autograph score, Mus. 685-6. A keyboard score of this work, now at Mus. 1141b (ff. 105-10), presumably formerly enclosed the violin parts.

For a further example of this copyist's hand, see Mus. 1142b (ff. 54-5).
