Manuscript. [John Blow], autograph full score of 'Gesta Britannica: an ode', divided between two volumes, as described below. English, c.1695.

'1st song', opening with the words 'Non arma Regum'.

Upright format, 330 x 203 mm. 15 folios, all with printed staves; no music written on f. 15v. The collation is unclear on account of the tightness of the binding. Contemporary paper wrappers, the upper of which is annotated 'For the Revd. Dr. Aldridg Dean of Xt church In Oxford' in Blow's hand. Now within an early 20th-century binding of red cloth and leather over boards. Bookplate 2. 19th-century shelfmark: K.2.58.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest (see above), first listed by Hind (in Archives 1717), item H.55, as 'Non arma, non arma &c. M.S.' The shelfmark 'H.55' is written on the upper original wrapper.

'2d song', opening with the words 'Dum pulsa strident timpana'.

Upright format, 332 x 205 mm. 8 folios, all with printed staves; no music written on f. 8v. The collation is unclear on account of the tightness of the binding. Contemporary paper wrappers. Now within an early 20th-century binding of red cloth and leather over boards. Bookplate 2. 19th-century shelfmark: K.2.57.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest (see Mus. 686 above), first listed by Hind (in Archives 1717), item H.56, as 'Dum pulsa strident &c. M.S'. The shelfmark 'H.56' is written on the upper original wrapper.
