Cazzati, Maurizio, 1616-1678 Grove
Il quarto libro delle canzonette a voce sola di Mauritio Cazzati maestro di capella in S. Petronio di Bologna, & Accademico Eccitato, opera XXXXIII. [corrected in ink to 'XXXXIIIIII.'] Nuovamente ristampata.
Bologna: 1668
RISM A/I C1642

Provenance: physical evidence (discussed below) shows that this volume comes from the Aldrich bequest, although there are no entries for it in Archives 1717 or Dowding. It receives its earliest catalogue entry in an addition by Hind to Dowding, at shelfmark M.4.4. Hind's original entry for that position had been 'Chearful Aires or ballads for 3 voices by Dr. Wilson 3 books' (= Mus. 499-501); but this is scored out, and replaced by: 'Il quarto libro delle Canzonette. Di Mauritio Cazzati. 1668'.

Oblong format, 210 x 149 mm. Late C17th binding of white vellum over boards, with stubs of ties at the fore-edge. On the titlepage, a monogram 'HA' (= Henry Aldrich) in ink in Aldrich's own hand, corresponding to the 'HA' attributions to autograph works by Aldrich in Mus. 18. (To view an image of the monogram as it appears in Mus. 331, follow this link.) Conceivably this is an early state of the more elaborate monogram that occurs in many volumes bound within an 'Aldrich binding'. Shelfmark 'M.4.4' on front flyleaf. Bookplate 2. C19th shelfmark: I.4.43.
