Mus. 173

Printed. Partitura only, lacking Cantus partbook.

Mus. 173
R. Floridus canonicus de Silvestris a Barbarano has alteras sacras cantiones, ab excellentissimis musices auctoribus suavissimis modulis unica voce contextas. In lucem edendas curavit. Pars secunda. Partitura [only].
Rome: Apud Ignatium de Lazaris, 1663
RISM B/I 16631

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest. The early catalogue entries for this item and the related Mus. 171-2 show some signs of confusion. In Archives 1717, item I17, the entry reads 'Floridi sacrae Cantiones', which could refer equally well to both editions. In Dowding (main hand), this is qualified as 'Rome 1663. Made into pieces for one voice from the compositions of other Masters'; this refers only to Mus. 173. The entry in Archives 1717 was subsequently emended by Hind to read 'Pars Secunda. 3 Books', implying that both Mus. 171-2 and Mus. 173 were by that time at this shelfmark.

Upright format, 224 x 167 mm. Mid C17th covers of coarse grey card, now within an early C20th binding of limp vellum with ties. The upper cover has been numbered '2' by an unidentified C17th hand, apparently in a numerical sequence together with Mus. 171-2 (which is numbered '1') and Mus. 223 (numbered '3'); this may imply that the volumes shared a common provenance before they entered Aldrich's collection. Shelfmark '[I] 17' on a label pasted to the titlepage. No early bookplate. (The policy of adding bookplates to only one volume of a partbook set has been carried out here, on the assumption that Mus. 171-2 and 173 constituted a single set; the bookplate occurs in Mus. 171.) C19th shelfmark: I.3.81.
