Mus. 171-2

Printed. Complete set of two performing parts.

Mus. 171-2
R. Floridus canonicus de Silvestris a' Barbarano has alias sacras cantiones, ab excellentissimis musices auctoribus suavissimis modulis unica voce contextas[.] In lucem edendas curavit.
Rome: Apud Franciscum Monetam, 1659
RISM B/I 16591
Mus. 171: Partitura; Mus. 172: Cantus.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest. The early catalogue entries for this item and the related Mus. 173 show some signs of confusion. In Archives 1717, item I17, the entry reads 'Floridi sacrae Cantiones', which could refer equally well to both editions. In Dowding (main hand), this is qualified as 'Rome 1663. Made into pieces for one voice from the compositions of other Masters'; this refers only to Mus. 173. The entry in Archives 1717 was subsequently emended by Hind to read 'Pars Secunda. 3 Books', implying that both Mus. 171-2 and Mus. 173 were by that time at this shelfmark.

Upright format, 222 x 163 mm. Mid C17th covers of coarse grey card, now within early C20th bindings of limp vellum with ties. The upper cover of Mus. 171 has ben numbered '1' by an unidentified C17th hand, apparently in a numerical sequence together with Mus. 173 (which is numbered '2') and Mus. 223 (numbered '3'); this may imply that the volumes shared a common provenance before they entered Aldrich's collection. The upper cover of Mus. 171 is also annotated 'Ad x Giugno1675' in a different, unidentified C17th hand. Shelfmark 'I.17' on original upper cover of Mus. 171. Bookplate 2 in Mus. 171 only. C19th shelfmarks: I.3.79-80.
