Mus. 1141a (ff. 78-85)

Manuscript. Parts for an instrumental work in d minor by Robert Orme, in 11 sections, the first called 'Overture'; English, early 18th century. The copyist, who is unidentified, collaborated with James Talbot in copying Mus. 1154(F*).

Upright format, c. 330 x 205 mm. The four parts, copied on four separate bifolios, have been nested, and are bound in the following order:

  • ff. 78 and 85: 'Tenor' [= viola]. Unused ruled staves on f. 78r.
  • ff. 79 and 84: 'Bass'. Unused ruled staves on f. 79r.
  • ff. 80 and 83: 'Violino 1mo'. Unused ruled staves on f. 80r.
  • ff. 81-82: 'Violino 2o'. Unused ruled staves on f. 81r.

Bound into Mus. 1141a, an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum. No early bookplate.

Provenance: possibly formerly associated with James Talbot, in view of the shared involvement with Mus. 1154(F*). See also Mus. 1152 (copied by another hand) for a song with words by Talbot and music by Orme. If associated with Talbot, the MS almost certainly reached Christ Church as part of the Aldrich bequest, together with other music linked with Talbot (see below).

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 38.

For a list of music manuscripts at Christ Church copied by or associated with James Talbot, see the entry for Mus. 1152.
