Mus. 1141a (ff. 66-9)

Manuscript. Draft composing scores and neat copies of six movements for two trebles and bass in D major and B flat major; English, probably early 18th century. Probably part of the repertory of the Oxford city/university waits or 'musick'. The copyist/composer, who has not been identified, is here designated as Copyist 'Z'; he was also responsible for other autograph scores and/or sets of performing parts within the Christ Church collection. For further details, see the entry for Mus. 34-6.

In the descriptions of contents below, suites or 'sets' of movements in the same key are distinguished from one another by means of roman numerals (I, II, etc), using and extending the numbering sequence of Mus. 34-6. Within each set, the number of movements is shown in round brackets: '(1-5)', etc.

The six movements are copied in the following order:

  1. ff. 66r-v: draft of a movement in D major, numbered '2' and headed 'Not slow. Middle time'. There is pastedown slip on f. 66r containing additional music to be inserted after the movement's first strain. For a fair copy of this movement by Copyist Z, see Mus. 1141c, ff. 124-5, where it forms the second movement of the suite or 'set' now designated as D major/VII (1-7).
  2. ff. 66v-67: neat copy of a movement in D major, numbered '4' and headed 'Not fast'. For a fair copy of this movement by Copyist Z, see Mus. 1141c, ff. 124-5, where it forms the fourth movement of the suite or 'set' now designated as D major/VII (1-7).
  3. ff. 67r-v: deleted draft of a movement in D major, with the annotation 'Writ upon another paper'; this probably refers to another draft of the same music by Copyist Z in Mus. 1128, sheet 39. For a fair copy of this movement by Copyist Z, see Mus. 1141c, ff. 124-5, where it forms the third movement of the suite or 'set' now designated as D major/VII (1-7).
  4. f. 67v: neat copy of a movement in D major, numbered '6' and headed 'M'. For a fair copy of this movement by Copyist Z, see Mus. 1141c, ff. 124-5, where it forms the sixth movement of the suite or 'set' now designated as D major/VII (1-7).
  5. f. 68r: neat copy of a movement in D major, without number or heading. For a fair copy of this movement by Copyist Z, see Mus. 1141c, ff. 124-5, where it forms the seventh movement of the suite or 'set' now designated as D major/VII (1-7).
  6. f. 69r-v: neat copy of a movement in B flat major, headed 'Quick', and with the annotation 'Writ upon another paper'. For a fair copy of this movement by Copyist Z, see Mus. 1128, sheet 2, where it forms the sixth movement of the suite or 'set' now designated as B flat major/II (1-8).
Upright format, c. 325 x 207 mm. One bifolium (ff. 66-7) followed by two single leaves (ff. 68, 69), all mounted on guards, and bound into Mus. 1141a, an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum. Unused ruled staves on f. 68v, which has been annotated with the word 'Schores' by Richard Goodson Jr. No early bookplate.

Provenance: probably from the Goodson bequest, together with all other manuscripts related to Mus. 34-6 (q.v.).

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 38.
