Mus. 1141c

Manuscript. Scores and performing parts for instrumental chamber music scored for two trebles and figured bass; English, probably early 18th century. Probably part of the repertory of the Oxford city/university waits or 'musick'. The copyists/composers, who are here designated as 'Z' and 'Y', have not been identified, and were responsible for many other autograph scores and/or sets of performing parts within the Christ Church collection. For further details, see the entry for Mus. 34-6. Mus. 1141c also contains (at f. 115) an unrelated sheet that is separately described in the entry for Mus. 1141c (f. 115).

Mus. 1141c comprises 10 separate sheets or bifolia, bound in largely random order within an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum (upright format, 700 x 656 mm). The sheets are foliated '114-25' in modern pencil; the foliation sequence continues from Mus. 1142a and Mus. 1142b.

Unless otherwise specified, all the pieces itemized below are in three-part texture, presumably intended for two violins and continuo. Sets of movements in the same key are distinguished from one another by means of roman numerals (I, II, etc), using and extending the numbering sequence of Mus. 34-6. Within each set, the number of movements is shown in round brackets: '(1-5)', etc.

  • f. 114: single sheet, oblong format, 455 x 380 mm. Recto: fragment (lacking the opening) of a movement in D major, copied in score by Copyist Y. (The upper left-hand corner of this sheet is missing.) This is the only known source of this movement, which appears not to have been subsequently incorporated into a single-key set. Verso: unused ruled staves.
  • f. 115: see the separate entry for Mus. 1141c (f. 115).
  • f. 116: single sheet, oblong format, 550 x 340 mm. Recto: two movements in D major, copied in score by Copyist Z. Neither of these movements appears to have been subsequently incorporated into a single-key set, and this is their only known source. Verso: unused ruled staves.
  • f. 117: single sheet, upright format, 685 x 473 mm. Scores of movements from Set in A major/1 (1-6), copied by Copyist Z, as follows: recto: A major/I (6, 5, 2); verso: A major/I (1). Performing parts for this set are in Mus. 34-6/5.
  • ff. 118-19: bifolium, mounted on a guard; upright format, 290 x 230 mm. Contains the first three movements of set in g minor/III (1-4), copied in score by Copyist Z. (The copy opens on f. 119v, continues on ff. 118r-v, and ends on f. 119r.) For another copy of this set with an added fourth movement, see Mus. 1132, sheets 14 and 25.
  • f. 120: single sheet, upright format, 685 x 467 mm. Copy in score by Copyist Z of Set in c minor/IV, movement 5, with the heading 'Writ into Books'; presumably this refers to the set of performing parts in Mus. 34-6/4.
  • f. 121: single sheet, oblong format, 477 x 345 mm. Second treble parts for (on the recto) Set in b minor/II (1-6), and (on the verso) Set in b minor/I (1-7}, copied by Copyist Z. Performing parts for these sets are in Mus. 34-6/24-5.
  • f. 122: single sheet, upright format, 685 x 475. Performing parts for movements in various keys 'For two Violins', copied in score by Copyist Y. The movements, which have not been identified elsewhere, evidently lack their bass parts.
  • f. 123: single sheet, upright format, 675 x 555 mm. Scores copied by Copyist Z of (on the verso) Set in b minor/I (1-4) and (on the recto) Set in b minor/I (5-7) followed by Set in b minor/III (9). Alternative scores of the Set in b minor/1 (1-7) are in Mus. 1136, layer 2. Performing parts for both sets are in Mus. 34-6/24 and 26.
  • ff. 124-5: formerly one large sheet in upright format; now separated into two half-sheets, both oblong format, 470 x 345 mm. Scores copied by Copyist Z of Set in D major/VII (1-7), with the movements numbered as '1-7'. The pages are to be read in the following order: f. 124r / f. 125r-v / f. 124v. Some of these movements also exist in drafts or preliminary copies in Mus. 1141a (ff. 66-9) and Mus. 1128, sheet 39. No performers' parts for this set are known to exist.
Provenance: probably from the Goodson bequest, together with all other manuscripts related to Mus. 34-6 (q.v.).

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 38.
