Mus. 586-91Printed. Complete set of six partbooks.
Provenance uncertain, but most likely from the Aldrich bequest. First recorded in Dowding at position I23, where the entry for 'Madrigali à 6. voc. Antw. 1604' has been annotated by Hind with the words 'Ditto'. Since position I23 was occupied by Mus. 129-34, and Mus. 586-91 duplicates its upper tract, the two sets were presumably brought together under one shelfmark for the sake of tidiness. Hind's addition of a duplicate copy at this location is confirmed by Burney f. 3, where the words 'D[itt]o Duplicate' are written below the main entry. Oblong format, 215 x 165 mm. Early C20th bindings of limp vellum with ties. No early bookplate; this, together with the absence of any early shelfmark, implies that earlier wrappers have been removed and are now missing. 19th-century shelfmarks: I.7.88-93.
Microfilm: The printed music of Christ Church, Oxford, reel 32. An early 17th-century hand has added numbers and small arabesques to the margins of some pieces in the Basso partbook (Mus. 591), presumably referring to a manuscript copy of them. For another copy of this edition, see Mus. 129-34, tract 1.
