Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717, item I23, as 'Philippi's Songs', qualified in Dowding (main hand) as 'Madrigali à 6. voc. Antw. 1604'. (A duplicate set of tract 1, which in the mid C18th was also located at shelfmark I23, is now Mus. 586-91.) Oblong format, 213 x 170 mm. Early C17th bindings of limp vellum; upper and lower cover gold-tooled with rules and ornaments (elaborate central panel; cherubs at corners of inner fillets); spines also gold-tooled with fillets and ornaments. Stubs of green ties at fore-edges. Upper covers annotated with short title ('Peeter Philipes his Songs of 6 voyces') and voice-names by an unidentified early C17th hand, possibly the same hand as on the original upper covers of Mus. 105-6. Shelfmark 'I.23' written in ink at head of spines in all six partbooks. Bookplate 2 in all six partbooks. C19th shelfmarks: I.3.37-42.
