Mus. 1027Manuscript. Treble partbook from an otherwise lost set of probably three, containing instrumental music by Christopher Simpson, John Jenkins and Thomas Lupo; English, mid 17th century. Two pages were subsequently used for a draft composition by Richard Goodson Jr; English, early C18th.
Copyists as follows:
Items 1-8 are copied from the front of the volume, items 9-10 from the rear.
Table of titles and composers in modern form. Display form found in manuscript.
Oblong format, 205 x 157 mm. Six gatherings, of which gatherings 1-3 and 5-6 originally each comprised four nested bifolios (= 8 folios each), and gathering 4 two nested bifolios (= 4 folios); 44 folios in total. The fourth sheet of gathering 2 has been excised and is now a stub. The first 13 folios are sporadically paginated '1-26' by Copyist A; of these, pp. 23-4 are now missing on account of the excised leaf. The last 6 leaves are foliated '1A-6A' in modern pencil. Unused ruled staves on p. [22]. No pagination or foliation in the remainder of the partbook, which contains unused ruled staves; the majority of the unused sheets are uncut at the upper edge. No trace remains of any early binding. Bookplate 3 at rear (f. 1A). 19th-century shelfmark: G. 37. Now stab-sewn into covers of stiff brown card, and mounted impermanently on a cord with a modern folder of stiff card, together with the unrelated Mus. 1025-6. Provenance: presumably from the Goodson bequest. Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 36.
