Mus. 1025-6
Manuscript. Two partbooks from a set of three, containing airs
for two violins and bass violin by Robert Smith (i) and John
Banister (i); English, probably 1670s. Compiled by at least four
copyists, none of whom has been identified. Mus. 1025 is designated
'Bas[sus]', and Mus. 1026 'Second Treble Or Med[ius]'; the first
treble partbook is missing. Many of the airs are grouped by key
and may be intended to form suites, though this is not specified
by the partbooks themselves. Comments on individual pieces:
- Items 2-5 in the inventory below were published in Tripla
concordia: or, a choice collection of new airs, in three parts.
For treble and basse-violins by several authors (London:
printed for John Carr, 1677; RISM 1677/4), pp. 25-32.
- Item 17: for another copy of this piece, see Mus. 1183 (ff. 1-12), item 1.
- Item 56: the first violin part for this piece is in Mus. 1183 (ff. 1-12), item 5.
- Item 58 has been added on fold-out pastedown slips in each partbook.
- Item 68: for another copy of this piece, see Mus. 1183 (ff. 1-12), item 2.
Items 1-63 (airs by Smith) are copied at the fronts of the volumes,
items 64-8 (airs by Banister) at the rear of Mus. 1026 only,
with the volume inverted.
Table of titles and composers in modern form. Display form found in manuscript.
Oblong format, 190 x 145 mm.
- Mus. 1025: 27 leaves, largely paginated in ink by the copyists.
Collation not wholly clear because of the tightness of the binding,
but probably A4 (pp. 1-8), B4 (9-16), C4 (17-24), D4 (25-32),
E4 (33-40), F8 (41-8), G4 (of which one leaf is missing; pp.
49-54). Unused ruled staves on pp. 17, 52 and 54.
- Mus. 1026: 31 leaves, largely paginated in ink by the copyists.
Collation: A4 (pp. 1-8), B4 (9-16), C4 (17-24), D4 (25-32), E4
(33-40), F8 (41-8), G8 (49-56), H8 (of which one leaf is missing;
pp. 57-62). Unused ruled staves on pp. 54-7 and 60.
Late 17th-century covers of stiff grey card; outside upper covers
annotated 'Rob: Smyth's Ayres' (Mus. 1025) and 'Mr Smith's Ayres'
(Mus. 1026). In Mus. 1026, the name 'John Jeffrey' is written
on a front flyleaf, and the initials 'JJ' on the outside upper
cover. Bookplate 3. 19th-century shelfmarks: G. 35-6. Each
partbook is now stab-sewn into covers of modern card, and mounted
impermanently on a cord within a protective folder, together
with the unrelated Mus. 1027.
Provenance not established, but probably from the Goodson bequest.
Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 36.
