Mus. 991

Manuscript. Alessandro Scarlatti, opera La Teodora augusta (first performed 1692), copied in score; Italian, late 17th century. Copied collaboratively by at least four copyists.

Oblong format, 275 x 217 mm. 156 folios, unfoliated. Collation not ascertained because of the tightness of the binding. Unused ruled staves on the recto and verso of the last leaf, with a sketch of an unidentified melody on the verso. Late 17th-century binding of mottled brown leather over boards, blind-tooled with fillets and small ornaments. Bookplate 2. 19th-century shelfmark: G.3.

Provenance uncertain. Possibly once owned by Sampson Estwick, whose name is written in pencil on the inside upper cover (as 'Estwick', preceded by what appears to be a monogram). Not listed in any of the early Christ Church catalogues until the entry by Hind (in Dowding), where it appears at position P7 as 'La Teodora Augusta by Scarlatti. MS'; in Mus. 991 itself, the shelfmark 'P.7' is written in ink in Hind's hand on the front flyleaf.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 56.
