Provenance: see below for markings by early owners or users. Then part of the Aldrich bequest, listed in Dowding (main hand) at shelfmark N.3.2; a full listing of the tracts is given there. Annotations to the titlepages of tract 1, Medius (Mus. 490) and Tenor (Mus. 492) have been crossed out and are not decipherable; there are also pen-trials on the last page of tract 1 Superius (Mus. 491). Annotation at top of first page of tract 7 (Mass for four voices) in all four partbooks: 'Homo cum sis, id fac semper itelligas. / Thomas Holbech', in a C17th hand. Annotations on the last page of tract 9 (Gradualia book 1): 'Miles Mayhew his booke' (Mus. 492) and 'hate is love enemi frindships so naybe and', both in early C17th hands. (See below for further information about these owners.) Annotation in tract 11, sig. C3: 'An excellent song (on faith)', in an early C17th hand.

Upright format, 217 x 165 mm. Late C17th bindings of the 'Aldrich binding' Type 3; the spines are gold-tooled with Aldrich's monogram, small ornaments and 'MOT F VI B[ooks]'. Blank sheets have been bound at the end of Mus. 494 to give it bulk. Index of contents on front flyleaf of Mus. 493 drawn up by the Aldrich Associate. Shelfmark 'N' on the front flyleaf of each volume. Index of contents by Malchair on front flyleaf of Mus. 491. Bookplate 2 in all six volumes. C19th shelfmarks: I.6.49-54.

John Harley and Richard Turbet have identified Thomas Holbech as the 3rd son of William Holbech of Birchingley Hall, baptized 21 October 1606 at Fillingley, Warwickshire. Admitted pensioner of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, 30 April 1622. Fellow 1629, Master 1675-80, Vice-Chancellor 1677-8. Vicar of Epping, Essex, 1641-3, sequestered, and 1677-8. Prebendary of St Paul's 1660-80. Rector of St Augustine's Church, London (not specified but presumably Watling Street) 1662-80. Died 1680.
