Mus. 358

*** This is an INTERIM entry ***

Manuscript. Pocket-book containing jottings by Richard Goodson Jr; English, early-mid 18th century. The inside lower cover has the following annotation in Goodson Jr's hand: 'Jhon Harris / at Mr Purcell / the upper end of kings / Street Over against / Bloomsberry Square'; this may refer to the organ builder John Harris.

Music has been copied both from the front and the rear of the volume. The following list of contents is provisional:

FROM FRONT:

  • f. 1r: opening of an unidentified fugue in D major (subject and start of answer only); treble clef.
  • f. 1v: 2 bars only of a piece in d minor, treble clef.
  • f. 2r: complete treble part of a movement in d minor.
  • ff. 2v-5r: draft in short score of a fugue-like movement in D major, incomplete at end.
  • f. 5v: draft of a single chant in D major.
  • f. 6r: canon '8 in one on one plain song', 'by Jhon Manyard', with text 'Oh follow me Tom John & Wilcock'.
  • f. 6v: opening of an unidentified fugue in D major (subject and 1st note of answer only); treble clef.
  • f. 12r: 'An exterordinary sharp 2d', plus music example.

FROM REAR:

  • f. 25v: opening of an unidentified fugue in G major (subject and 1st note of answer only); treble clef.
  • ff. 25r-24v: draft in short score of a movement in C major.
  • ff. 24r-22v: draft in short score of a movement in D major.
  • ff. 22r-21r: draft violin part of music in C major for a work including a 'Sym[phony]' and a 'Song'.
  • ff. 20r-17v: draft in short score of a movement in C major.
  • ff. 15r-14r: words and music incipit apparently for a catch beginning 'Bring of florence a flask'.
  • f.13v: part of bass to [Henry Purcell], 'Sum up all the delights' [= Z.275].

Oblong format, c. 137 x 113 mm. Originally a single gathering of 14 nested bifolios (= 28 folios); three folios have been excised; foliation of the remaining 25 is modern. Contemporary wrappers of white vellum, apparently cut from a legal document, with further annotations by Goodson Jr (discussed below). No early bookplate. 19th-century shelfmark: I.4.70.

Provenance: presumably from the Goodson bequest.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 11.

The outside upper cover has been annotated by Goodson Jr with what appears to be a partial list of other music owned by him; it is now rubbed, faded, and partly illegible. The following transcription preserves the original lineation (10 lines), and adds references to identified items:
