Mus. 1204

Manuscript. Anon. [Giovanni Battista Bassani?], 'Esurientes, venite' for soprano, bass and continuo, copied in score by Richard Goodson Jr; English, early 18th century. The attribution of the motet to 'Del Sigr Bassani' on p. 1 has been added by Malchair. This copy presumably derives from the one made by Richard Goodson Sr in Mus. 48 (item 4).

Upright format, 393 x 255 mm. Nested fascicle of 3 bifolios (= 6 folios in total), paginated '1-12' by Goodson Jr; unused ruled staves on pp. 8-12. No early bookplate. Now within an early 20th-century binding of limp vellum. Formerly Mus. 1190, then Mus. 1140.

Provenance unknown, but most likely from the Goodson bequest. Not recorded in any early catalogue until Havergal Summary, where it is listed among the Portfolios at position I.2.β, item 11: 'A motett by Bassani. MS.' In Mus. 1204 itself, the portfolio reference 'I.2.β' is written in red crayon at the head of p.1.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 60.
