Provenance: see below for marks of early ownership. Part of the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717, item I24, as 'Archadelt's Madrigals 4 Books'; the entry in Dowding (main hand) adds a more comprehensive listing of composers, and 'Venice 1561'.

Oblong format, c. 215 x 155 mm. Late C16th bindings of limp white vellum, stabbled at fore-edges for ties, and stamped 'H B' in gold on the upper and lower covers. These initials can be identified as Henry Billingsley, owner of Mus. 318-19 and Mus. 508-9. All three sets have the initials 'A B' in C17th pencil on their front flyleaves or uppermost titlepages. The inside upper cover of Mus. 307 also has the names 'henry Ashlye' and 'henry more' in late C16th hands. Shelfmark 'I.24 ' on a label pasted to the lower cover of Mus. 309. Bookplate 2 in all four volumes. C19th shelfmarks: I.4.18-21.
