Mus. 1289 Byrd, William, 1542 or 3-1623 Yonge, Nicholas, d. 1619 Musica transalpina. Madrigales translated of foure, five and sixe partes, chosen out of divers excellent authors, with the first and second part of La verginella, made by Maister Byrd, upon two stanza's of Ariosto, and brought to speake English with the rest. Published by N. Yonge, in favour of such as take pleasure in musicke of voices. Provenance: bought at auction in Oxfordshire in 1992 (in a lot comprising the items now designated as Mus. 1287-91); earlier provenance undocumented. Stab-holes imply that the partbook has at some time been bound. Annotations: bass part of a textless composition added on blank staves on sig. C3. C19th/20th jottings in pencil.

Upright format, 205 x 150 mm. Unbound and loose in sections. Sigs. A1 and A2 are detached from one another, with sig. A2 glued to a C19th protective paper wrapper.
