Mus. 1225
Manuscript. Organ accompaniments for English services and anthems,
with miscellaneous additions; copied in Oxford for use at Christ
Church Cathedral, probably in the 1820s. (Follow this link for
a list of surviving music-books from Christ Church Cathedral from the Restoration to the early 19th century.) In
the inventory below, items 1-25 (services and additions) are
copied at what is now designated as the front of the volume,
items 26-33 (anthems) at the rear with the volume inverted.
Mus. 1225 was copied collaboratively by a number of hands, none
of which has yet been identified.
Comments on individual items:
- Item 2: added to supplement Aldrich's Service in G (item 1).
- Item 3: sketched in pencil in short score, using staves left
blank during the copying of item 1.
- Item 5: added to supplement Rogers' Whole Service in D (item
4).
- Items 7 and 8: added to supplement King's Service in C (item
6).
- Item 12: According to Joseph Foster, Alumni Oxoniensis
(London, 1888), Richard Lane Freer matriculated Christ Church
in 1824, aged 18.
- Items 17 and 28: William Cross was organist of Christ Church
Cathedral in 1807-25.
- Items 23-5: added in pencil on previously unused pages.
- Item 26: copied in vocal score.

Oblong format, 365 x 255 mm. 90 folios, paginated in ink the
copyists; the pagination was subsequently partly trimmed away
by the binder. Mid 19th-century binding of rough brown leather
over boards, with panels of red leather inset into the upper
and lower covers, gold-tooled with the words 'SERVICES' and 'ANTHEMS'
respectively. The binding was repaired in 1972. No early bookplate.
Provenance: transferred from Christ Church Cathedral, probably
in the early 20th century.
