Mus. 1154(B)

Manuscript. Unattributed song 'Whilst Health & blooming Youth' for two voices (soprano, bass) and continuo. There are two copies: a short score (f. 2), which is in the hand of James Talbot, and may be his composing autograph; and a neat copy in full score (ff. 1, 3), in an unidentified hand, probably not Talbot's own. Both English, late C17th.

Upright format, 327 x 207 mm. Single sheet (f. 2) enclosed within a bifolio (ff. 1, 3); foliation is modern. Unused ruled staves on ff. 1r, 2v, 3v. Formerly folded once vertically and once horozontally. Now pasted into a modern card folder, and mounted impermanently on a cord within an early 20th-century folder of stiff card and vellum containing all 13 sections of Mus. 1154. On f. 1r, the pasted label [Mus] '1037' refers to the superseded shelfmark for the entire contents of Mus. 1154, of which this was presumably the topmost item.

Provenance unknown. Apparently formerly shelved within the Portfolios at position I.2.δ. Although the reference 'I.2.δ' does not itself appear on Mus. 1154(B), the item was listed at that position by York Powell in his sheets of notes now loose at the end of Mus. 1154. In Havergal Summary, the contents of portfolio I.2.δ are described in summary as '7 Latin motetts; 5 Italian cantatas, & 2 fragments; & 8 Songs & Duets &c: Anon: MS.'

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 60.
