Mus. 1138

Manuscript. Performing parts and a partial score of a suite or 'set' in B flat major; English, probably early 18th century. This work probably formed part of the repertory of the Oxford city/university waits or 'musick'. The copyist/composer, who has not been identified, is here designated as Copyist 'Z'; he was also responsible for other autograph scores and/or sets of performing parts within the Christ Church collection. For further details, see the entry for Mus. 34-6. For scores of further movements of this set, see Mus. 1126, sheets 7-8.

Mus. 1138 comprises 7 separate sheets, bound in largely random order within an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum (upright format, 485 x 350 mm). The sheets are numbered in modern pencil.

  • Sheets 1-3 and 5-7: set of three instrumental partbooks containing all seven movements of the set. Sheets 1 and 5: 'First Treble'; sheets 2 and 6: 'Second Treble'; sheets 3 and 7: 'Base'. Unused ruled staves on sheets 5v, 6v and 7v.
  • Sheet 4: scores of three movements only of the set. For scores of further movements, see Mus. 1126, sheets 7-8.
Provenance: probably from the Goodson bequest, together with all other manuscripts related to Mus. 34-6 (q.v.). Formerly Mus. 1049 (see printed label pasted to sheet 7 verso).

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 37.
