Mus. 1126

Manuscript. A miscellany of instrumental movements copied in score; English, early 18th century. Sheets 1-5 contain movements (or extracts of movements) from sonatas by Lelio Colista. The remaining sheets transmit movements or sets of movements in three-part score (two trebles and bass); these works probably formed part of the repertory of the Oxford city/university waits or 'musick'. The copyist/composer, who was responsible for copying everything in Mus. 1126, has not been identified, and is here designated as 'Copyist Z'; he was also responsible for other autograph scores and/or sets of performing parts within the Christ Church collection. For further details, see the entry for Mus. 34-6.

Mus. 1126 comprises 21 separate sheets, bound in largely random order within an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum (oblong format, 550 x 365 mm). The sheets are numbered 1, 2, 2*, 3, 3*, 4, 4*, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9*, 10, 10*, 11, 11*, 12, 12*, 13 and 13* in modern pencil. The following summary description aims to reflect the original relationship of the sheets, and therefore only partially respects their current bound order.

  • Sheets 4* and 5: oblong format, 465 x 300 mm. Figured bass parts for sonatas by Lelio Colista. The pages are to be read in the following order: sheets 5r-v, 4*v-r. In the following inventory, 'W-K' references are to the thematic catalogue of Colista's sonatas by Antonella D'Ovidio (see Bibliography below).
Table of titles and composers in modern form. Display form found in manuscript.
1 Lelio Colista Sonata 16 W-K 5r
2 Lelio Colista Sonata 12 W-K 5r-5v
3 Lelio Colista Sonata 25 W-K 5v-4*v
4 Lelio Colista Sonata 28 W-K 4*v
5 Lelio Colista Sonata 22 W-K 4*r
6 Lelio Colista Sonata 27 W-K, incomplete 4*r

  • Sheets 1, 2, 2*, 3, 3*: oblong format, c. 465 x 300 mm. Movements (or extracts of movements) from sonatas by Lelio Colista, copied in score. The majority of these movements also feature among the figured bass parts copied on sheets 4* and 5 above. The end of sheet 3*v includes figured bass parts for Colista's Sonata 27 W-K, which is incomplete on sheet 4*r above. Unused ruled staves on sheets 1v, 2v and 2*v.
  • Sheets 4 and 6: oblong format, 470 x 340 mm. Fair copy in score of a five-movement suite or 'set' in A major. The pages are to be read in the following order: sheets 4v-r, 6r-v.
  • Sheet 7 (upright format, 470 x 343 mm; the top of the sheet is now bound into the gutter of the guardbook) and sheet 8 (oblong format, 540 x 330 mm). Fair copies in score of three movements from a seven-movement suite or 'set' in B flat major (movements 7, 3 and 6). Performing parts for this set, together with scores of the remaining movements, are in Mus. 1138. Unused ruled staves on sheet 8v.
  • Sheets 9 and 9*: oblong format, 467 x 327 mm. Fair copy in score of a five-movement suite or 'set' in b minor. The order of the movements is unclear, but the pages were probably meant to be read in the following order: sheets 9*r, 9v, 9r, 9*v.
  • Sheets 10 and10*: oblong format, 540 x 325 mm. Fair copies in score of four movements from a nine-movement suite or 'set' in b minor (movements 1-2 and 4-8). The pages are to be read in the following order: sheets 10*r, 10v, 10r, 10*v. Performing parts for this set, also copied by Copyist Z, are in Mus. 34-6(26), and on sheets 11 and 11* below. For further scores of movements from this set, see Mus. 1135, sheet 4r, and Mus. 1141c, f. 123r.
  • Sheets 11 and 11*: oblong format, 470 x 345 mm. Second Treble performing part for a nine-movement suite or 'set' in b minor, here omitting movement 8. Unused ruled staves on the versos of both sheets. A full set of performing parts for this work, also copied by Copyist Z, is in Mus. 34-6(26). For scores of movements 1-2 and 4-8, see sheets 10 and 10* above; for further scores of movements from this set, see Mus. 1135, sheet 4r, and Mus. 1141c, f. 123r.
  • Sheets 12 and 12*: oblong format, 465 x 330 mm. Fair copy in score of a seven-movement suite or 'set' in b minor. The order of the movements is unclear, but the pages were probably meant to be read in the following order: sheets 12r, 12*v, 12*r, 12v.
  • Sheets 13 and 13*: 470 x 345 mm. Fair copy in score of a six-movement suite or 'set' in C major, and a 3-voice canonic work in C major. Performing parts for these pieces, also copied by Copyist Z, are in Mus. 1218(A-C)(4-5).
Provenance: probably from the Goodson bequest, together with all other manuscripts related to Mus. 34-6 (q.v.). 19th-century shelf-positions: initially part of K.1.19 (together with the contents of Mus. 1124, which are in upright format), then Mus. 1058 (see the printed label pasted to f. 9*v).

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 60.
