Mus. 1136

Manuscript. A miscellany of instrumental movements and sets of movements in three-part texture (two trebles and bass) copied either in parts or in score, and including compositional drafts; English, probably early 18th century. Probably part of the repertory of the Oxford city/university waits or 'musick'. The copyists/composers, who have not been identified, are here designated as Copyists 'Z' and 'Y'; they were also responsible for other autograph scores and/or sets of performing parts within the Christ Church collection. For further details, see the entry for Mus. 34-6.

Mus. 1136 comprises 9 separate sheets, bound in largely random order within an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum (upright format, 655 x 545 mm). The sheets are numbered in modern pencil.

In the descriptions of contents below, sets in the same key are distinguished from one another by means of roman numerals (I, II, etc), using and extending the numbering sequence of Mus. 34-6. Within each set, the number of movements is shown in round brackets: '(1-5)', etc.

  • Sheets 1-6: oblong format, 415 x 277 mm. A complete set of three instrumental partbooks (sheets 1-2: 'First Treble'; sheets 3-4: 'Second Treble'; sheets 5-6: 'Base') for the set in E flat major/II(1-9 ), copied by Copyist Y. This is the only known source of this work. Unused ruled staves on sheets 2v, 4v and 6v.
  • Sheets 7 and 9: originally two bifolia, each folded horizontally; now presented as single sheets in upright format, 650 x 535 mm; sheet 8: upright format, 480 x 317 mm, with a central horizontal fold. Collectively these three sheets contain scores and drafts of two single-key suites or 'sets' in b minor, copied by Copyist Z. The sets in question are: (a) set in b minor/I (1-7), for which there are further draft scores by Copyist Z in Mus. 1141c, f. 123, and performers' parts copied by Copyist Z in Mus. 34-6/24 and in Mus. 1141c, f. 121v; (b) set in b minor/II (1-6), for which there are further draft scores by Copyist Z in Mus. 1135, sheet 10, and performers' parts copied by Copyist Z in Mus. 34-6/25 and in Mus. 1141c, f. 121r. In the present source, however, the movements have not been grouped together as sets, and instead are copied or drafted in the following order: sheet 7r: set in b minor/I (1); set in b minor/II (5); set in b minor/I (7); sheet 7v: set in b minor/I (5, 2, 3); sheet 8r: set in b minor/II (2); sheet 8v: set in b minor/II (5); sheet 9r: set in b minor/II (5-6); set in b minor/I (4, 6); sheet 9v: set in b minor/II (1, 4, 2-3). Some of the movements are annotated with the words 'Writ fair' or 'Writ into another paper', and/or supplied with numbers that refer to their subsequent arrangement into sets.
Provenance: probably from the Goodson bequest, together with all other manuscripts related to Mus. 34-6 (q.v.).
