Mus. 1132

Manuscript. A miscellany of scores, drafts and sketches of instrumental chamber music scored for two trebles and figured bass; English, probably early 18th century. Probably part of the repertory of the Oxford city/university waits or 'musick'. The copyist/composer, who has not been identified, is here designated as 'Copyist Z'; he was also responsible for many other autograph scores and/or sets of performing parts within the Christ Church collection. For further details, see the entry for Mus. 34-6. Mus. 1132 also contains (at sheet 3) a draft indenture copied by Z and dated 1708.

Mus. 1132 comprises 27 separate sheets, mounted on guards in largely random order within an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum (oblong format, 425 x 375 mm). The sheets are numbered in modern pencil as follows: 1-3, 3* and 4-26.

In the descriptions of contents below, sets in the same key are distinguished from one another by means of roman numerals (I, II, etc), using and extending the numbering sequence of Mus. 34-6. Within each set, the number of movements is shown in round brackets: '(1-5)', etc.

  • Sheet 1: oblong format, 350 x 230 mm. Recto: draft composing score of a movement in C major, with extensive deletions. Verso (with the sheet inverted): a fair copy of the same movement. See sheet 2 below for preliminary sketches for this movement, and sheet 17 for a neater fair copy of the finished movement. The recto of sheet 1 also contains a sketch for the opening of an unrelated movement in C major, a full fair copy of which is notated on sheet 3* below. Neither of these movements appears to have been subsequently incorporated into a single-key set.
  • Sheet 2: oblong format, 305 x 187 mm. Recto: miscellaneous sketches, including material for the movement in C major copied on sheet 1 above and sheet 17 below. Verso: draft score of a movement in C major, with the parts designated 'Trumpet', 'Violin' and 'Base'; the score has been crossed out and is annotated 'Transcrib'd'; this probably refers to the neat fair copy of the same movement on the recto of sheet 16 below. Neither of these movements appears to have been subsequently incorporated into a single-key set
  • Sheet 3: upright format, 313 x 200. Recto: fair copy by Copyist Z of a draft indenture between 'Thomas Whittingham of Betley in the County of Stafford yeoman' and 'John Whittingham of Drayton in hales in the county of Salop [Shropshire] Blacksmith (son & heir apparent of the said Thomas Whittingham)', dated 1708. Verso: blank.
  • Sheet 3*: oblong format, 310 x 200 mm. Recto: fair copy of the movement in C major sketched on the recto of sheet 1 above. This movement appears not to have been subsequently incorporated into a single-key set. Verso: blank, without ruled staves.
  • Sheet 4: oblong format, 365 x 303 mm. Recto: fair copy of the first two movements of the set now designated as G major/e minor/I; the remaining three movements are on sheet 5 below. This is the only known source of the set. Verso: blank, without ruled staves.
  • Sheet 5: 365 x 303 mm. Recto and verso: fair copy of the last three movements of the set in G major/e minor/I; the preceding two movements are on sheet 4 above.
  • Sheet 6: upright format, 330 x 210 mm. Recto: fair copy of the first movement of a ?7-movement set in e minor; the remaining movements are on sheets 7-10 below. Mus. 1132 is the only known source of this set, which is now designated as e minor/IV (1-?7). Verso: unused ruled staves.
  • Sheet 7: upright format, 240 x 210 mm. Recto: fair copy of an unnumbered movement from the ?7-movement set in e minor, the remaining movements of which are on sheets 6 above and 8-10 below. Verso: unused ruled 4-line staves.
  • Sheet 8: oblong format, 327 x 73 mm. Recto: fair copy of the second movement of the ?7-movement set in e minor, the remaining movements of which are on sheets 6-7 above and 9-10 below. There is an abandoned incipit of this movement on sheet 13 below (inner pages.) Verso: draft of the same movement.
  • Sheet 9: oblong format, 415 x 330 mm, now folded vertically to form a bifolium. Inner pages: fair copy of two unnumbered movements from the ?7-movement set in e minor, the first headed 'Rondeau / middle time', the second 'Slow / Almain time'; the remaining movements of this set are on sheets 6-8 above and 10 below. Outer pages: unused ruled 4-line staves.
  • Sheet 10: upright format, 323 x 220 mm. Recto: fair copy of the fifth movement of the ?7-movement set in e minor, headed 'Middle time'. Verso: fair copy of the sixth movement of the same suite. The remaining movements of this set are on sheets 6-9 above.
  • Sheet 11: oblong format, 355 x c.150 mm. Recto: draft score of the first strain of a movement in B flat major, modulating to the dominant. This movement appears not to have been subsequently incorporated into a single-key set, and this is its only known source. Verso: blank, without ruled staves.
  • Sheet 12: oblong format, 373 x 303. Recto: fair copy of a 4-movement set in c minor/C major. There is another fair copy of the fourth movement on sheet 24 below. These are the only known sources of the set now designated as c minor/C major/I (1-4). Verso: blank, without ruled staves.
  • Sheet 13: oblong format, 405 x 325, now folded vertically to form a bifolium. • Sheet 14: oblong format, 403 x 310. Recto: fair copy of movement 1 and the opening of movement 2 from the set now designated as g minor/III (1-4); the remainder of this set is copied on sheet 25 below. (The first three movements of this set are also copied in score in Mus. 1141c, ff. 118-19.) Verso: blank, without ruled staves.
  • Sheet 15: oblong format, 455 x 350, now folded vertically to form a bifolium. Recto and verso: fair copies of five movements (numbered '1-4' and '6') of a set in C major. The missing fifth movement may be the one copied on sheet 16 verso below. This is the only known source of the set now designated as C major/XI (1-6).
  • Sheet 16: oblong format, 350 x 230 mm. Recto: neat fair copy of the movement in C major for 'Trumpet', 'Violin' and 'Base' drafted on sheet 2 verso above. Verso: fair copy of a movement in C major, headed '5'; this may form part of the set C major/XI (1-6) copied on sheet 15 above.
  • Sheet 17: oblong format, 355 x 220 mm. Recto: neat fair copy of the movement in C major sketched and drafted on sheets 1 and 2 above. Verso: blank, without ruled staves.
  • Sheet 18: oblong format, 365 x 180 mm. Recto and verso: fair copies of two movements in C major, the first in triple time, the second headed 'For two trumpets'. The verso is copied with the sheet inverted. For another copy of the movement 'For two trumpets', see sheet 20 below. For an earlier copy of the movement in triple time, see sheet 26 below. Neither of these movements appears to have been subsequently incorporated into a single-key set.
  • Sheet 19: oblong format, 350 x 220 mm. Recto: fair copies of two movements in G major, neither of which appears to have been subsequently incorporated into a single-key set; this is their only known source. Verso: blank, without ruled staves.
