Mus. 995
Manuscript. An unattributed set of Lamentations for Maundy Thursday,
Good Friday and Holy Saturday, scored for solo voice, two treble
instruments and continuo, derived (according to the annotation
on f. 1r) from the church of S. Apollinare in Rome; copyist possibly
Italian, early 18th century. The volume was bound at Christ Church
in the late 18th century as part of an uncompleted binding project
intended to protect previously unbound items from the Aldrich
and Goodson bequests. (For a list of other volumes in related
bindings, see the entry for Mus. 3.) For another copy of these
Lamentations, made by the same copyist, see Oxford, Bodleian
Library, MS. Mus. d. 215 (bequeathed in 1948 by T. W. Bourne).

Late 18th-century binding of white parchment over boards, undecorated
except for two parallel fillets at edges. Spine in contrasting
brown leather; on the spine, a red leather inset, tooled in gold:
'CANTATE / IN S.TO APOLLINARE / DI ROMA'. No trace remains of
any earlier binding. Bookplate 2 on inside upper cover. 19th-century
shelfmark: G.6.
Provenance: from the Goodson bequest, listed in Clement 1747
as 'Cantate [later changed to 'Cantata'] in Sto. Apollinare di
Romes [changed to 'Rome'] / MS in Score No. 51', and in Malchair
1787 (f. 5) as 'Lessons. or Motetts. As sung in / St. Appolinare
at Rome'. Clement's number '51' is written on a label pasted
to f. 143v; it has also been added to the front flyleaf (not
in Clement's hand).
Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 57.
