Provenance: apparently from the choir of New College, Oxford
(see below). Then part of the Goodson bequest, listed in Clement 1747 as 'Madrigals Diluca Marenzio 5 Books / In Anversa 1610
No. 58', and in Malchair 1787 (f. 14) as 'first-2-3-4-5th Book
of Villanelles and / Canzonetts Neapolitan stile / with many
other setts. Printed at / Antwerp 1610 - 5 books. Luca Marenzio'.
Prior to his appointment as Organist of Christ Church, Richard
Goodson Sr held an equivalent position at New College.
Oblong format, c. 210 x 170 mm. Early C17th bindings of rough
brown leather over thick card boards, blind-tooled with fillets
at the edges. The following annotations point to New College
as the likely place of origin: Mus. 974, front flyleaf, annotations:
'Manners Maketh man' [= New College motto]; also 'W. W.' [=
William of Wykeham, founder of New College], enclosing the arms
of New College. Mus. 978, outside lower cover: annotated 'Bassus
Dec[ani].' There are various other annotations and pentrials,
including Mus. 975, rear flyleaf: 'william wootton although
he is a Bishop yet he is a rogue'. Clement's number-label ('58')
is still in place on the lower cover of Mus. 976. Bookplate
3 in all volumes. 19th-century shelfmarks: I.1.13-17.
