Mus. 945
Manuscript. Arias for solo voice and continuo, many of which
have been extracted from the operas 'Eteocle e Polinice' by Giovanni
Legrenzi and 'Enea in Italia' by Carlo Pallavicino, both of which
were first performed in Venice during Carnival 1675; unidentified
Italian copyist, last quarter of 17th century. Some of the unidentified
arias may be from Giovanni Legrenzi's opera 'L'Achille in Sciro'
(Venice, 1663).
The arias in Mus. 945 have been numbered '83-204' by the copyist,
and occupy nineteen fascicles that themselves are numbered '28-46'.
This implies that Mus. 945 is the second part of a larger collection,
the first part of which is either lost or has not been located.

Late 17th-century binding of thick card, the covers of which
have been removed and are now mounted on guards within an early
20th-century replacement binding of red morrocco over boards.
Inside original upper and lower covers annotated with the initials
'R[ichard]. G[oodson Jr]'. Bookplate 3. 19th-century shelfmark:
E.1.10. Loose within the volume are five undated sheets of notes
compiled by Godfrey E. P. Arkwright and Charles van den Borren,
largely concerning the arias by Legrenzi; they probably date
from c.1920.
Provenance: from the Goodson bequest, listed in Clement 1747
as 'Cantate [changed to 'Cantatas'] M.S. No. 60', and in Malchair
1787, f. 13, as 'A book Covred with brown paper Containing /
Dramatic songs for a single voice & Bass / such as Eteocle
and Polinice no name of the Composer'. Clement's number-label
has been partly removed from the original outside upper cover.
