Manuscript. Complete set of four partbooks, containing instrumental
music ('tunes') for 'the Play Call'd the Cheat's or the Canting
Astrolloger' (J. Wilson), by Thomas Tollett; copyist unidentified;
English, c. 1693. The four partbooks are now bound consecutively
in the following order: Violino primo, Violino secundo, Tenor
and Basso.
Oblong format, 207 x 105 mm. Details of partbooks as follows:
- Violino primo: single gathering of six nested bifolios, of which
ff. [1v-6r] are paginated '1-10' in contemporary ink. Unused
ruled staves on ff. [1r, 6v]. Front flyleaf inscribed 'Mr Tolletts
tunes In / the Play Call'd the / Cheat's or the Canting / Astrolloger
/ first trebles'. Contemporary binding of marbled paper over
thin card; on the outside upper cover, an insert of red leather,
tooled in gold: 'VIOLINO PRIMO'.
- Violino secundo: single gathering of six nested bifolios, of
which ff. [1v-6r] are paginated '1-10' in contemporary ink. Unused
ruled staves on ff. [1r, 6v]. Front flyleaf inscribed 'Mr Tolletts

Bound within a contemporary binding of mottled brown leather
over boards, blind tooled with fillets at the edges; inset of
red leather on the outside upper cover, tooled in gold: 'Mr TOLLETTS
SET OF TUNES'; remains of a metal clasp at the fore-edge. Bookplate

Provenance: from the Goodson bequest. Not listed in any of
the 18th-century catalogues of the Christ Church music collections.
