Manuscript. Jottings and music theory, almost all in the hand of Richard Goodson Jr; English, early 18th century.

Upright format, 255 x 197 mm. 8 surviving folios; there is evidence of other sheets and gatherings having been excised or removed. Foliated in pencil in August 2001; microfilms made before that date will not show this foliation. Early 18th-century binding of marbled paper over boards, quarter bound in vellum. No early bookplate. 19th-century shelfmark: I.1.40.

Contents as follows:

  • Outside upper cover: annotated 'Singing Part', subsequently deleted. Also a pasted label annotated 'C'.
  • Inside upper cover: annotation apparently in the hand of Richard Fawcett (matriculated Corpus Christi College, Oxford, 26 Aug. 1730): 'A Written Score of Oedipus &c [= Mus. 32] / Opera of Phaeton by Lully [= Mus. 602] & Cantatas by Clarembault [= Mus. 605] lent to / me Ri: Fowcett of C.[orpus] C.[hristi] C.[ollege] Sept. 20th 1735.'; this annotation subsequently crossed out, and the following note added underneath by Goodson Jr: 'N: B: Oct: 25 - all 3 book sent home again by George'. Further annotation by Goodson Jr: 'Mem: October 1st 1735 / Mr Fowcett brought me the / Borees Mass books of Mr Fords Writing / 9 books in a Small Cover / (to preserve the same)' [= Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Mus. Sch. D. 232]. Fawcett was one of the copyists of Mus. 68-75.
  • f. 1v: opening of a draft of a Magnificat (treble and bass), in the hand of Goodson Jr. Unused ruled staves on f. 1r.
  • f. 2r: unidentified fragment in keyboard score, in D major, possibly a chant; then a table of pitches identified by solmization syllables; all copied by Goodson Jr.
  • ff. 2v-4r: material transcribed by Goodson Jr 'from Morley's Introduction', presumably his own copy (= Mus. 802).
  • ff. 4v-5r: examples of ligatures, coloration etc., copied by Goodson Jr, with the following heading: 'Here are the notes / that were transcribd from Praelestini [= Palestrina] formerly at Newbery For Dr Aldrich Calld / Ligatur / Of Dr Heathers belonging to the Schools'. (This may refer to the manuscript copies of Palestrina's motets in Mus. 10.) Unused ruled staves on ff. 5v-6r.
  • ff. 6v-8r: unidentified instrumental movement in F major, copied in score by Goodson Jr; incomplete at the end, and partially in draft, as if his own composing score or arrangement. Unused ruled staves on f. 8v.
  • Inside lower cover: table of notes of 'The Gamut'; copyist unidentified. Signatures: 'Mary K [or H]'; also 'Richard Goodson [Jr] Cst Cch Coll.'

Provenance: from the Goodson bequest. Formerly bundled with Mus. 68-75; collectively, these occupied position no. 18 in William Clement's ordering of the Goodson books, although no entry for them appears in Clement 1747 itself. In Malchair 1787 (f. 4) they are listed as 'Nine ragged books in bords marble paper / the Contents not examined / tyed wit read tape'.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 9.
