Mus. 419-22

Manuscript. Four partbooks containing performing parts for English consort music. Copyist unidentified; English, probably third quarter of the 17th century. Several of the pieces lack one or more voice-parts; either the missing parts were written into a lost fifth partbook, or (more probably) the set was abandoned before copying was finished. Item 18 was added by Henry Aldrich probably in the late 17th century.

Upright format, 250 x 190 mm. Physical structure:

  • Mus. 419: 46 folios, the first 8 of which are foliated [0] and '1-7' in modern pencil; thereafter unfoliated. Collation: A6 (ff. [0]-5), B6 (ff. 6-7 and [8-11]); remaining collation not researched. Unused ruled staves on f. [0]r, and from f. 6v to the end of the volume.
  • Mus. 420: 48 folios, the first 22 of which are foliated [0] and '1-21' in modern pencil; thereafter unfoliated. Collation: A6 (ff. [0]-5), B6 (ff. 6-11), C6 (ff. 12-17), D6 (ff. 18-21 and [22-3]); remaining collation not researched. Unused ruled staves on ff. [0]r, 12v-15r, and from f. 20v to the end of the volume.
  • Mus. 421: 42 folios, the first 21 of which are foliated [0] and '1-20' in modern pencil; thereafter unfoliated. Collation: A6 (ff. [0]-5), B6 (ff. 6-11), C6 (ff. 12-17), D6 (ff. 18-20 and [21-3]); remaining collation not researched. Unused ruled staves on ff. [0]r, 12v-15r, and from f. 19v to the end of the volume.
  • Mus. 422: 51 folios, unfoliated. Collation not researched. Unused ruled staves on ff. [1-50r] and [51v].
Late 17th-century 'Aldrich binding', Type 1; edges marbled. Spines gold-tooled: 'FANT / F / 4.B.', and numbered '1-4'. Bookplate 2 in all four partbooks. 19th-century shelfmarks: I.5.29-32.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest (on grounds of the binding and the presence of Aldrich's handwriting). Probably the set listed in Dowding (main hand) at shelfmark N.3 as 'Fancies / MS. in 4 parts'; no shelfmarks are written into Mus. 419-22 themselves.
