Manuscript. Originally a treble partbook containing instrumental pieces (items 1-4 in the inventory below); copyist unidentified, possibly French, probably late 17th century. Subsequently used for pedagogy by Richard Goodson Sr and an unidentified pupil, possibly an adult male singer, including rudiments and simple keyboard pieces; English, c. 1700. Copyists as follows:

  • Items 1-4: unidentified, possibly French.
  • Items 5-7, 8 and 11: Richard Goodson Sr.
  • Items 9-10: Goodson's pupil.

Oblong format, 205 x 103 mm. 45 surviving folios; collation not researched. Several leaves from the textblock have been excised, including possibly a leaf preceding what is now designated as item 1. Partly foliated in modern pencil as follows: at the front of volume, the first seven folios are ff. '1-7'; at the rear of the volume, ff. [0], '1', and '22-30'. Unused ruled staves as follows: at the front of the volume, ff. 3v-4r, 5v-6r and 7r-v; at the rear, ff. 1v, 22v, 26r-27r, 29v, 30v; and all the remaining leaves at the centre of the volume. Late 17th-century binding of partly mottled brown leather over boards, blind-tooled with fillets. No early bookplate. 19th-century shelfmark: I.4.71.

Provenance: from the Goodson bequest (on grounds of the presence of Goodson's hand within the volume). Not listed in any of the 18th-century catalogues of the Christ Church music collections.
