Provenance: see below for marks of early ownership. Part of
the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717, item K4, as
'A Collection of Mottets for 3 Voices'; in Dowding (main hand)
the entry is qualified: 'Only the Tenor. Louvain 1569', emended
by Havergal to read 'Tenor & Bassus'.
Oblong format, 213 x 155 mm. Late C16th bindings of limp white
vellum, stabbed at fore-edges for ties. Voice-names are written
in ink on the upper outside covers, in unidentified hands. The
titlepages of the top tracts in both volumes are annotated 'Rich.
Forster. Ex dono Magistri Henrici Billingesley'. The latter
name corresponds to the initials 'H B' stamped on the front and
rear covers of Mus. 306-9 and Mus. 508-9. All three sets
have the initials 'A B' in C17th pencil on their front flyleaves
or uppermost titlepages. Mus. 319 also has the name 'Elizabeth
Waren' in C17th pencil on the inside lower cover. Shelfmark
'K.4' on the front flyleaf of both volumes. Bookplate 2 in
both volumes. C19th shelfmarks: I.4.30-31.
