Mus. 1219(I-T)Manuscript. Autograph score (Mus. 1219I) of [Richard Goodson Sr], 'Rejoice in the Lord O ye righteous' ('Ps 33d'); English, early 18th century. Also a set of performing parts for the same work (Mus. 1219(J-T)) copied principally by Richard Goodson Jr probably in two stints, the second c. 1734 . Formerly Mus. 1219, item 10. Mus. 1219(I) is a stitched fascicle in upright format, made out of two gatherings, the first (gathering A; 327 x 210 mm) of 3 nested bifolios, the second (gathering B; 337 x 245 mm.) of 2 nested bifolios; 10 folios in total. Foliation was added (at the foot of the sheets) in August 1998, and will not be visible in microfilms made before that date. Gathering B (ff. 6-9) is stitched into Gathering A after f. 5; the last sheet of gathering A is therefore now f. 10. There are unused ruled staves on ff. 5v and 10r-v. The pages with music notation were mostly numbered in ink (1-[14 ]) apparently by Richard Goodson Sr. Annotation on f. 9v by Richard Goodson Jr: 'June-15-1734. This Anthem having been for a considerable Time lain by, was in the single parts wanting, excepting instrumental parts'. Annotation on f.1r (= front cover) by Philip Hayes: 'Anthem with Instruments, for four voices By Mr Richard Goodson Senr. NB The Author's original manuscript. Probably compos'd for the Public Act in 1713 [last two digits entered over an erasure] and Perform'd at St Mary's Church, or still earlier, upon the Accession of King William.' Mus. 1219(J-T) is a complementary set of performing parts, all in upright format, mostly 327 x 210 mm. As implied by Richard Goodson Jr's annotation in Mus. 1219(I), f. 9v, these parts seem to have been copied in two stints, separated by a number of years and here designated 'early' and 'late':
Mus. 1219(I-T) are now loose within an early 20th century portfolio folder containing all 10 sections of Mus. 1219, the contents of which were foliated and allocated new call-numbers (including the alphabetic letters A-U) in September 1990, with further minor adjustments made in August 1998. In microfilms made before those dates, this item is numbered '10'. Provenance: almost certainly all from the Goodson bequest. Not recorded in any early catalogue until Havergal Summary, where it is listed among the Portfolios at position I.2.β (together with Mus. 1219(G) and Mus. 1219(H)), item 17, as '3 anthems by R. Goodson Sr: original MS.'; in Mus. 1219(I) itself, the portfolio reference 'I.2.β' is written in red crayon at the head of f. 1r.
