Mus. 961

Manuscript. Keyboard music and arias, copied by Richard Goodson Jr, some of it possibly in composing drafts; English, early 18th century. In addition to its musical contents, the book is annotated with names and verbal material.

Music has been copied both from the front and the rear of the volume. The following list of contents is provisional:

FROM FRONT:

  • f. 1r: ending of an unidentified keyboard piece in F major.
  • ff. 1v-6v: unidentifed aria for treble voice, treble instrument and bass, partially underlaid with text beginning 'Sento a schar'; possibly a composing score by Goodson Jr.
  • ff. 7r-8r: fragment for three instruments (two trebles and bass), probably a composing score by Goodson Jr.
  • ff. 8v-12v: untexted work variously in two or three parts, probably a composing score by Goodson Jr, and headed (f. 8v) 'mem[orandum:] had wrote this out to send it to mr powell to put some words to it'.
FROM REAR:
  • f. 14v: unidentified air in D major for treble instrument.
  • ff. 14r-13v: unidientified keyboard piece (minuet?) in G major.
Oblong format, 237 x 120 mm. 25 leaves in 4 gatherings, as follows:
  • gathering A: largely excised, and now comprising a bifolio (ff. 1-2) and a single leaf (f. 3).
  • gathering B: 4 nested bifolios (= 8 folios, ff. 4-11).
  • gathering C: 3 nested bifolios (= 6 folios, ff. 12 and 12A-E).
  • gathering D: 4 nested bifolios (= 8 folios, ff. 12F-K and 13-14).
Foliation is in modern pencil, and originally included only those sheets on which music notation is present (viz. ff. 1-12 and 13-14); the remaining 13 leaves were foliated as 12A-K in December 2004. Contemporary binding of thick grey card edged with vellum, with a panel of marbled paper mounted at the centres of the upper and lower covers. Bookplate 3. 19th-century shelfmark: E.1.26.

Provenance: presumably from the Goodson bequest.

Not included in the standard microfilm edition.

Annotations:
AT FRONT:

  • inside upper cover (Goodson Jr): 'Writing for the Choir - / Boy's part 4 pages & a halfe / CounterT: 4 pages / Ten: Can'. Also the name 'Crowley', probably not in Goodson Jr's hand.
  • f. 1r (Goodson Jr): 'Mem on the Bndy Stick / August the 19th / Notches 40'.
AT REAR:
  • Inside lower cover: various jottings by Goodson Jr, largely crossed out, and including 'Allkin had a bunch of 4 keys'; also (in other hands) the names of 'James ?Baurny' and 'francis gregory'. (For a reference by Goodson Jr to a chorister called 'Gregory', see Mus. 527-30, Mus. 1024 (at Mus. 529, ff. 54v-55r).)
  • f. 13r (Goodson Jr): 'Qu[ery]: the Measure of the Antique notes / In praenestenies [= Palestrina's] Books, resolve / to compare the Characters / in the Scool Book's with those / few of the Anthem's I had / formerly Transcrib'd out / of Praenestinies Book for / Dean Aldridge'. This probably refers to Palestrina's use of ligatures, which Goodson addresses in Mus. 76, ff. 4v-5r.
  • f. 12Kv (Goodson Jr): 'Nominativo hic -etc- [followed by diagram]': presumably a reference to Goodson Jr's copy of Tarquinio Merula's madrigal in Mus. 1078.
