Mus. 941

Manuscript. Violin parts for suites and miscellaneous movements; presumably one partbook from a set originally of three, of which the other violin part and the bass are lost; single unidentified copyist; English, ?third quarter of 17th century. No composers' names are supplied. The copyist of Mus. 941 may be one of the hands represented in the early layer of Mus. 90-1.

Oblong format, 197 x 97 mm. Structure: 45 surviving leaves, foliated by the copyist; collation not researched. Fragment of front flyleaf: various pentrials, including 'John brown of yeasington [Easington] in the County of oxon.' Late 17th-century binding of brown leather over boards, blind tooled with fillets, and with decorative tooled edges. Bookplate 3 on inside upper cover. 19th-century shelfmark: E.1.6

Provenance: probably from the Goodson bequest. Possibly part of the repertory of the Oxford city waits.
