Mus. 865(B)

Manuscript. Vocal performing parts for English services. English, early 18th century. Each part is written on a free-standing bifolio, as follows:

Mus. 865(B), ff. 1-10: unidentified Service in C: Ca, D.

  • ff. 1-2: '2d Treble'
  • ff. 3-4: [Tenor]
  • ff. 5-6: [1st treble]
  • ff. 7-8: [Contratenor]
  • ff. 9-10: [Bass]

Mus. 865(B), ff. 11-12: [Henry Aldrich], Service in A: T (ending only), J, Ca, D.

  • ff. 11-12: [Contratenor]

Two copyists were responsible for these sheets; both are unidentified. In ff. 1-10, the work of the principal copyist has sometimes been corrected by the second copyist, who was wholly responsible for ff. 11-12. (See below for information about the second copyist.)

Upright format, 330 x 210 mm. Each of the six bifolios is pasted to a modern paper guard, the whole now enclosed within a modern card folder, and mounted impermanently on cords within an early 20th century folder containing all 4 sections of Mus. 865.

Provenance unknown. Formerly shelved within the Portfolios at position I.2.γ (the reference 'I.2.γ' is written in red crayon on f. 1r). In Havergal Summary, the contents of that portfolio are described only in summary as '14 Anonymous anthems, mostly separate, with fragments of others, & 3 services in parts. MS'.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 29.

For further examples of the second copyist's work, see the entry for Mus. 615.
