Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest. For most of the C18th, the partbooks were split over four locations, resulting in the variety of early shelfmarks and catalogue entries, as described below.

Upright format, 278 x 190 mm. Late C17th covers of marbled paper over thin board, each now stitched into a folder of modern card and mounted impermanently on cords within an early C20th folder of stiff card and vellum. Shelfmarks and catalogue entries are as follows:

  • Mus. 813: originally placed at K32 (the shelfmark 'K.32' is written on the original upper cover), and listed at that position in Archives 1717 as 'Cantica Sacra by Dering & Others'; the entry was subsequently deleted and replaced by 'v[ide]. B.14'. Then part of B14; shelfmark 'B.14' on original upper cover and front flyleaf.
  • Mus. 814: listed by Hind in Dowding at shelfmark M.4.37, as 'Cantica Sacra, à 2 & 3 voc by R. Dering'; the entry was subsequently deleted and replaced by 'v. B.14.' Then part of B14; shelfmark 'B.14' on original upper cover and front flyleaf.
  • Mus. 815: apparently located throughout at B14, and listed in that position in Archives 1717 as 'Cantica Sacra by Dering, Gibbons, Rogers, Lock &c.'; a later hand has added '3 Books. Lond. 1662'. The shelfmark 'B.14' is written on the front flyleaf; the same mark was probably also on the label that is now largely torn from the upper original cover.
  • Mus. 816: placed at shelfmark 'H.31' (written on inside original upper cover), and listed at that shelfmark in Archives 1717 as 'Cantica Sacra by Dering and Gibbons', qualified by Dowding (main hand): 'Lond. 1662'. It was still separated from the other partbooks when seen by Burney, and was finally reunited with the other three partbooks by Malchair in 1787.

Contents list on inside original front cover of Mus. 816 by the Aldrich Associate. Bookplate 2 in all four partbooks. Lower original cover of Mus. 813 annotated by Havergal. C19th shelfmarks: K.4.27-30.
