Mus. 783

Manuscript. Anthem 'O Lord! Grant the Queen a long Life', copied in score; copyist unidentified, English, c. 1700. This piece is ascribed elsewhere to Henry Aldrich; see for example the organ accompaniment in Mus. 1230, item 26. However, no copy of it survives in Aldrich's own hand, and it appears to have been attributed to him only posthumously.

Upright format, c. 375 x 245 mm. Single gathering of 3 nested bifolios (= 6 folios), stab sewn within early 18th-century wrappers of thick marbled paper. Bookplate 2. Now bound within an early 20th-century binding of thick card and vellum. 19th-century shelfmark: K.3.88.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717, position H39, as 'L[or]d grant the Queen a long life an Anthem'; there is an equivalent entry in Dowding, with the additional description 'MS. 5 voices'. In Mus. 783 itself, the shelfmark 'H.39' is written on the front flyleaf following the upper 18th-century wrapper. None of the 18th-century catalogues attribute this work to Aldrich.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 29.
