Mus. 760

Manuscript. Complete set of nine performing parts for church music by Robert Creighton; English, late 17th century. The set is the work of two copyists, both of whom are unidentified; they are designated below as 'A' and 'B'.

  • Mus. 760b: 'Can[toris treble]'; Copyist B.
  • Mus. 760c: 'Dec[ani treble]'; Copyist B.
  • Mus. 760d: 'Counter[tenor] Dec[ani]'; Copyist B.
  • Mus. 760e: 'Can[toris contratenor]'; Copyist B.
  • Mus. 760f: 'Dec[ani tenor]'; Copyist B.
  • Mus. 760g: 'Can[toris tenor]; Copyist B.
  • Mus. 760h: 'Dec[ani bass]; Copyist B.
  • Mus. 760i: 'Bas: Can[toris]'; Copyist B.

The inventory below relates only to the 'Organ Part' (Mus. 760a). In the eight vocal parts (Mus. 760b-i), item 1 occupies pp. 1-7 (or 8), item 2 occupies p. 8 (or 9).

Upright format, 335 x 215 mm. Collation:

  • Mus. 760a ('Organ Part'): single gathering of 4 nested bifolios (= 16 folios), paginated '1-16' in ink by the copyist.
  • Mus. 760b-g and i (vocal parts): each comprises a single gathering of 2 nested bifolios (= 4 folios), paginated '1-[8]' by the copyist.
  • Mus. 760h: a single gathering of 2 nested bifolios (= 4 folios), followed by a single sheet, paginated '1-[10]' by the copyist.

Formerly loose within a wrapper of marbled paper, the upper sheet of which bears a label annotated by Malchair; this wrapper is now bound into the volume. Bookplate 2. Early 20th-century binding of stiff card and vellum. 19th-century shelfmark: K.3.65.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717, item H15, as 'Dr Crayghtons Service', qualified in Dowding (main hand) as being 'MS'. The shelfmark 'H.15' is written in ink on the inside upper original wrapper.
