Manuscript. Opening verse section of anthem 'Ah my soul, why
so dismayed?' by 'Dr [Christopher] Gibbons'; score and two vocal
parts, copied by Edward Lowe; English, 3rd quarter of 17th century.

mm. Unused ruled staves on ff. 1r and 2v. Title added by Lowe
on f. 1r.
- Mus. 693(B): 1st treble vocal part, texted. Single sheet,
oblong format, 186 x 149 mm. Unused ruled staves on verso. Pasted
to modern paper sheet.
- Mus. 693(C): 2nd treble vocal part, texted. Single sheet,
upright format, c.280 x190 mm. Unused ruled staves on verso.
Pasted to modern paper sheet.
Each item is mounted impermanently on cords within an early 20th-century
binding of red cloth and leather over boards (upright format,
345 x 225 mm.). Foliation adjusted in March 1989 and July 1999;
the present foliation system will not be present in microfilms
made before those dates. No early bookplate. 19th-century shelfmark:
K.2.65.
Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest, listed in Archives 1717,
item K21, as 'An Anthem by Dr Gibbons'. In Mus. 693(A), the shelfmark
'K 21' is written in ink on a label pasted to f. 2v.
