Mus. 690

Manuscript. Violone part for [Giovanni Battista Bassani], motet 'Quid arma, quid bella', copied by James Talbot. English, late 17th century. For the matching vocal score of this work, and details of other performing parts for motets by Bassani also copied by Talbot, see the entry for Mus. 763.

Upright format, 325 x 211 mm. Bifolio, pasted to a guard and mounted impermanently on a cord within an early 20th-century folder of red cloth and leather over boards. The heading 'II' at the start of the music refers to this motet's position within the vocal short score, Mus. 763. Foliation added in July 1999. Music has been copied on the inside pages only; ff. 1r and 2v are blank ruled staves. No early bookplate. 19th-century shelfmark: K.2.62.

Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest. A label numbered '42' is pasted to f. 1r; this connects the sheet with the entry in Archives 1717 at position H42: 'Songs, & Instrumental Music', to which a later hand has added 'wanting'. (There is an identical entry in Dowding.) The full extent of material originally kept at position H42 is now unknown, but it probably included the matching bifolio that is now Mus. 689.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 49.
