Mus. 599

Manuscript. Treble partbook from a set of two (the bass partbook is lost), containing two-part airs by John Jenkins, and two-part adaptations of harp consorts by William Lawes; copyist unidentified, English, mid 17th century. For autograph scores of many of the same airs by Jenkins, see Mus. 1005. For a copy of the harp parts for Lawes's harp consorts, see Mus. 5. Some of the contents of Mus. 599 have indications of dynamics: 'lo[ud]' and 'so[ft]'.

Oblong format, 190 x 145 mm. 85 leaves, of which the first 30 are foliated in modern pencil. Collation not entirely clear, but probably A8 (ff. 1-8), B8 (of which B7 is excised; ff. 9-15), C6 (ff. 16-21), D2 (ff. 22-3), E6 (ff. 24-29); subsequent collation not researched (unused ruled staves from f. 29v to end). Mid 17th-century binding of brown leather over boards, gold-tooled with an ornamental panel and fillets on the upper and lower covers. No early bookplate. 19th-century shelfmark: I.7.101.

Provenance: presumably from either the Aldrich or the Goodson bequest; more likely from the latter because of the absence of an early shelfmark or bookplate. Not included in any of the 18th-century catalogues of the Christ Church music collections.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 25.
