Manuscript. A dual-purpose instruction book compiled by Richard
Goodson Sr for teaching treble voice (reading from the front,
items 1-22) and keyboard (reading from the rear, items 23-34);
English, early 18th century. According to an inscription on the
inside lower cover, the book was owned or used by Catherine Brooks
('her Book'). Several pieces were copied twice, in vocal and
keyboard versions; for details, see the inventory below.

Oblong format, 203 x 160 mm. 48 folios, foliated [0], 1-26, 26a,
27-46 in modern pencil; in addition, the pastedown leaf on the
inside lower cover is foliated '47'. Collation:
- Layer 1 (music for voice, ruled with 5-line staves): A8, B8,
C8 (= ff. [0]-7; 8-15; 16-23).
- Layer 2 (music for keyboard, ruled with 6-line staves): D8, E8,
F8 (= ff. 24-30; 31-38; 39-46).
Unused ruled staves on ff. [0r], 1v-3r, 4v-5r, 23v, 24r-35v,
37r-v, 38v, 39v, 43v and 45r. Early 18th-century binding of brown
leather over boards, blind-tooled with an ornamental panel and
fillets on the upper and lower covers. No early bookplate. 19th-century
shelfmark: I.7.82.
