Mus. 554 (ff. 4-9)

Manuscript. Score of Mr [John] Blow, Service in e minor (Benedicite, Jubilate, Kyrie, Creed, Cantate Domino, Deus misereatur), copied by Edward Lowe. English, before 1677 (the year of Blow's doctorate).

Six single sheets, oblong format, c. 475 x 370 mm. Each sheet is now pasted to a modern paper guard, and mounted impermanently on cords within Mus. 554, an early 20th-century guardbook of stiff card and vellum. No early bookplate. The sheets are arranged in three nested fascicles:

Fascicle i: ff. 4-6. Attached to the bottom of f. 5 is an extension sheet, f. 5*. Contains Benedicite (ff. 4r-5v) and Jubilate (f. 6r); f. 6v is ruled with unused staves.
Fascicle ii: ff. 7-8. Contains Kyrie (f. 7r), Creed (ff. 7r-8r) and Cantate Domino (ff. 8r-8v).
Fascicle iii: f. 9. Contains Deus misereatur (ff. 9r-9v).

Provenance unknown. Not recorded in any early catalogue until Havergal Summary, where it is listed among the Portfolios at position I.2.β, item 10: 'Blows complete service in E. in score. MS. end of XVII. cent:'; in Mus. 554 (ff. 4-9) itself, the portfolio reference 'I.2.β' is written in red crayon at the head of f. 4r.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 25.
