Provenance: from the Aldrich bequest. The C18th catalogues
imply that this set was at first split over more than one location,
but subsequently partially reunited. In Archives 1717 there
is an entry at position G8 for 'Marenzio's Madrigals'; the corresponding
entry in Dowding (main hand) adds 'Only the tenor', but this
has been deleted, and 'Perfect' added in a later hand; the number
'8' is written in ink on the spines of the five vocal partbooks
(Mus. 533-7). These volumes may subsequently have been moved
to position N.2.6, since there is an entry for them at that position
in Dowding (main hand). The Basso Continuo partbook (Mus.
283) remained detached from its partners, and was placed at position
I30; that shelfmark is written in ink on the spine of the volume,
and on pastedown leaves at the front and rear of the book.
Oblong format, 213 x 170 mm. Early C17th wrappers of vellum
over boards; fillets at the edges of the upper and lower covers;
also on the spines of Mus. 533-7; otherwise untooled. Bookplate
2 in all 6 volumes. C19th shelfmarks: Mus. 533-7: K.2.7-11;
Mus. 283: I.3.190.
