Mus. 517-20

Manuscript. Set of four partbooks containing instrumental works by Alfonso Ferrabosco (ii), Richard Mico, John Ward and John Jenkins; copyist unidentified, English, c. 1630-50. The same copyist, who is sometimes characterized as having a 'tremulous hand', was also responsible for the five-voice partbook set Mus. 527-30, Mus. 1024, to which the four-voice repertory of Mus. 517-20 is evidently complementary.

The contents of Mus. 517-20 are arranged in two layers, numbered by the copyist in separate sequences, the second with the heading 'Aires by mr Jenkins'. Pieces in the first sequence (items 1-44 in the inventory below) are scored for unaccompanied viols, and are therefore complete. The pieces in the second sequence (items 45-54) require an organ part; this may have been supplied in a fifth partbook, now missing. In Mus. 519, the opening of item 7 (f. 6v) has been copied a second time on f. 7v; the erroneous copy has been abandoned on the fourth stave.

Table of titles and composers in modern form. Display form found in manuscript.
The first column gives the modern numbering of the pieces; the second shows numbering used by the copyist(s).

  • Mus. 519: 48 leaves. In the early 20th century, leaves at the rear of the volume were foliated '24-47', commencing at what is correctly f. 25. The remaining foliation was added in 2009, and uses the system '1-23, 23A'. Collation: A8 (ff. 1-8), B8 (9-16), C8 (17-23, 23A), D8 (24-31), E8 (32-39), F8 (40-7). Unused ruled staves on ff. 8r and 47v.
  • Mus. 520: 48 leaves. In the early 20th century, leaves at the rear of the volume were foliated '45-51', commencing at what is correctly f. 42. The remaining foliation was added in 2009, and uses the system '1-41'; the numbers '42-4' are therefore omitted from the sequence. Collation: A8 (ff. 1-8), B8 (9-16), C8 (17-24), D8 (25-32), E8 (33-40), F8 (41, 45-51). Unused ruled staves on ff. 10r, 12r, 46v and 50r-51v.
