Mus. 49 (pp. 1-43A)

Manuscript. Unattributed Mass for five voices in C major with continuo, copied by Francis Smith; English, 1690s. The Mass is attributed to 'Carissimi' on the spine of the host volume, which is of later date than the copy itself.

Upright format, 315 x 195 mm. 22 folios, of which ff. 2r-21r are paginated '3-41' in contemporary ink. Unused ruled staves on f. 1r-v (pp. '1-2') and 21v-22v (pp. 42, 43, 43A). Stab-holes in the gutter imply that an earlier binding has been removed. Now bound into Mus. 49, a late 18th-century guardbook bound in white parchment over boards.

Provenance unknown, but most likely from either the Aldrich or the Goodson bequest.

Microfilm: manuscript music, reel 6.
